The coastal challenge

Why coastal render cracks and blows

Render fails on the coast for a few reasons, and salt is behind most of them. Render is porous, so it absorbs salt-laden moisture; when that moisture evaporates, the salt crystallises inside and pushes the render apart, the bubbling, flaking and crumbling you see, usually worst low on the wall. Cracking can come from movement, moisture or simple age, and once render is cracked or blown, water and salt get in behind it and accelerate the failure. The key point is that coastal render damage is usually a symptom. Patching the surface without addressing what caused it just hides the problem until it returns.

Repaired to hold

How we repair and recoat render

01

Diagnose the cause

Movement, moisture, salt or age: each needs a different fix, and patching without knowing why guarantees it returns.

02

Remove what's failed

Blown, drummy or salt-contaminated render comes off back to sound substrate, not patched over.

03

Repair and rebuild

Re-render with appropriate, coastal-suitable materials that let the wall breathe and manage moisture.

04

Texture and coat

Match the texture and apply protective coatings suited to the exposure so the repair looks right and holds up.

What you can expect

How we work with you

Honest advice, not an upsell.

We tell you what your home actually needs, and what it doesn't. If something can wait, we'll say so. We'd rather build a long relationship than win one oversized job.

We treat the cause, not just the surface.

Most coastal problems come back because they were patched, not fixed. We work out what's actually driving the damage (salt, moisture, corrosion) and deal with that, so the repair lasts.

A proper look before any quote.

We assess your property in person before we put a number on anything. It's free, there's no obligation, and it's the only honest way to quote coastal work, because every home is exposed differently.

The coast is all we do.

We're not generalists who also do beach houses. Coastal salt, corrosion and weather are our entire focus, which is why we catch the things others miss.

Why it matters

Built for the coast.

Anyone can paint a wall or wash a house. The coast is different: salt gets into render, corrodes metal from the inside, and breaks down coatings from underneath, and it never stops. Treating coastal problems like inland ones is why so much work fails early.

Salt Coast exists for exactly this. We diagnose before we treat, use methods and materials suited to coastal exposure, and build ongoing maintenance relationships rather than one-off jobs. That's how a coastal home stays sound instead of lurching from one repair to the next.

Maintenance Plans

Keep your home ahead of the coast, not chasing it.

Without a plan

You wait for paint to peel, render to bubble, metal to rust, then react to damage that's been spreading for months.

On a plan

We catch it before it shows, while every fix is still small, cheap and quick, and you never lift a finger to manage it.

Common questions

FAQs

Why does my render keep cracking or bubbling?

On the coast it's usually salt. Render absorbs salt-laden moisture, which crystallises inside and pushes it apart, causing bubbling and crumbling, while cracking can come from movement, moisture or age. The damage is usually a symptom, so patching without addressing the cause means it returns.

Salt damage on rendered walls: signs to look for and how repairs work

Can you just patch over blown render?

No. Blown or drummy render, the hollow-sounding kind, has detached from the wall and has to be removed back to sound material, not patched over. Patching over it just buries the problem and the patch fails too.

What's the difference between render repair and salt damage treatment?

They overlap. Render repair fixes the render itself: cracks, blown areas, recoating. When salt is the cause, treating it properly also means addressing the salt and moisture source, which is salt damage treatment. For salt-damaged render we do both: treat the cause and repair the render.

Can you match my existing render texture?

In most cases yes, we match the texture and finish when recoating repaired render so the repair blends with the existing wall, and apply coatings suited to coastal exposure.

Will the repair last, or will it fail again?

It lasts if the cause is addressed, not just the surface. We diagnose why the render failed and fix that, and on the coast the repair stays sound longest when salt is kept washed off so it doesn't soak back in. Patching without addressing the cause is what makes render fail again.
