Why does my render keep bubbling and crumbling after it's repaired?
Because the salt is still in the wall. Render is porous and absorbs salt-laden moisture, which crystallises inside and pushes the render apart. Patching or painting over it without removing the salt-contaminated material and treating the moisture source means it returns, often within months.
Can you treat salt damage permanently?
It can be treated so it doesn't return, but on the coast that means treating the cause and then keeping salt from re-accumulating, not a single one-off fix. We remove damaged material, address the salt and moisture source, rebuild with suitable materials, and the repair is protected by keeping surface salt washed off.
What's the white powdery staining on my walls?
That's efflorescence, salt carried to the surface by moisture and left behind as the water evaporates. The bloom itself is usually harmless, but it signals moisture and salt moving through the wall. Cleaning it without addressing the moisture source just lets it come back.

Is salt damage the same as rising damp?
They're related. Rising damp draws salt up from the ground into the wall, where it then crystallises and damages render. Airborne sea salt does similar damage from the outside. Treating salt damage properly involves identifying which source (or both) is driving it.
Why can't I just repaint over salt-damaged walls?
Because paint traps the salt and moisture in the wall, and the salt keeps crystallising underneath until the new coat blisters off. Salt damage has to be treated at the substrate, the salt removed and the source addressed, before any recoating, or the failure simply repeats.
