Why coastal driveways and paving need sealing
WA driveways and paving, especially the popular exposed aggregate and limestone, are porous, and porous surfaces soak up everything: oil, tyre marks, dirt, and the orange iron staining from bore-water reticulation that's so common here. On the coast, salt and weather add to the wear, and untreated limestone in particular is soft and degrades over time. Sealing fills and protects the surface so stains sit on top and wipe off instead of soaking in, and so the surface itself wears far more slowly. Why should I seal my driveway?
Because surfaces like exposed aggregate, limestone and paving are porous. They soak up oil, dirt, tyre marks and bore-water staining, and break down faster unsealed. Sealing protects the surface so stains sit on top and wipe off instead of soaking in, and so the surface wears far more slowly. It protects an expensive-to-replace surface and keeps it looking good.
Can you remove oil and bore-water stains from a driveway?
Yes, oil marks and the orange iron staining from bore water are treated and removed as part of the clean, before sealing. This matters because sealing over existing stains just locks them in, so proper stain removal first is essential to a good result.
How often does a driveway need re-sealing?
Periodically, sun, traffic and weather wear the sealer down over time. The exact interval depends on the surface, the sealer and how much use and exposure it gets. Re-sealing a surface that's been kept sealed is far cheaper and easier than rescuing one left to stain and degrade, so refreshing before the seal wears through is the cost-effective approach.
Do limestone and exposed aggregate need different sealers?
Yes. Limestone is soft and very porous and needs a sealer suited to it; exposed aggregate, concrete and paving each want their own products and finishes, from a natural look to a wet-look sheen. Matching the sealer to the surface is part of getting a result that protects properly and looks right.
Will sealing make my driveway slippery?
It depends on the sealer and finish chosen. Some high-sheen sealers can be slicker when wet, but there are finishes and additives designed to keep slip resistance, which we match to the surface and how it is used. A sloped or poolside area needs more care here than a flat front drive.
